Your Role

What was your role when you started vs. now?

I started as 1st year apprentice, and am now in the 2nd year of my apprenticeship.

Tell me about a typical day for you?

A typical day for me will involve fitting pipe, helping my tradesmen get set up and overall just taking care of the smaller tasks to make sure our jobs flow as smoothly as possible.

Tell me about the variety of your role?

My role comes with loads of variety from stripping out old pipe work, to piping up smaller jobs like radiators and installing fan coil units.

Tell me about the variety of tasks/projects/ you have worked on?

Over the course of my career I’ve been lucky to have a variety of experiences on site. I started on maintenance in the Queen Elizabeth then went on to Methil Care Home were I got involved in the boiler house fitting pump sets. I'm now piping up fan coil units for one of our financial services clients which involves running heating and chilled lines.

Tell be about your biggest achievement in your current role to date?

My biggest achievement so far for would have to be each individual time where the work I had completed was praised by members on site.

What has surprised you most about your role?

The thing that has surprised me the most about my role is the amount of responsibility you get the further into your apprenticeship you go which I appreciate and it's really beneficial for learning. If you are given enough responsibility to try things on your own and get feedback afterwards, personally I feel like that’s the best way to grow as an apprentice.

The Workplace

Tell me about any good memories you have with your colleagues out with your working day?

Good memories for me would include all the times you have a laugh with your colleagues.

What do you love most about working for Morris & Spottiswood?

What I love most is the opportunity to travel to different areas in Scotland that I’ve never been to.

Tell me more about what you expected from the role, versus what you actually get out of the role now?

Before starting I was unaware how much variety was involved, and how many different ways you could complete the same job.

Tell be about your Morris & Spottiswood highlight?

My Morris & Sporttiswood highlight would be getting to work at Strathclyde Uni helping out with the uni accommodation as it was my first proper site.

Development Opportunities

Tell me about the development opportunities in your role?

For me every day is an opportunity to develop as there’s always something new in your day-to-day work that you might not be familiar with. I personally think you have loads of opportunity at every site to learn and grow with the line of work.

How is your growth/development supported?

My development is supported by my colleagues on site and the support I get at college. They always have time to answer any questions I have and to show me new things they know I’m not familiar with.

More About You

What do you enjoy outside of work/hobbies?

I enjoy going to music gigs and watching the football and boxing.

Tell me an interesting fact about you?

I am a twin.

What did you see yourself doing when you left school?

When I left school I had no idea what I was going to do - I had an open mind to anything.

Name a role model you look up to and why?

My role models would be those who I work with on site. This is because they don’t just help me learn within work, but also help answer any questions I have about the adult world, giving me plenty of advice.
